In a democratic society, government institutions cannot function well without citizens’ trust. If they lack this trust, their effectiveness decreases significantly, leading to even less trust from citizens. Mistrust thus breeds mistrust, and a downward spiral is created that leads to serious social problems such as the emergence of parallel structures, the growth of corruption, the rise of anti-system sentiment, or, in a critical case, state failure.
