On November 16 and 30, two more hybrid educational events, titled Truth and Lies in the Online World, took place at the Faculty of Education of Palacký University in Olomouc. The audience included current and prospective teachers, journalists and other target groups.
During the two-hour interactive lecture, the audience became familiar with the issues of disinformation, fake news, and misinformation. According to the feedback we got, the participants especially appreciated the wide variety of specific activities aimed at strengthening children’s media literacy, which can be successfully implemented in classrooms.
The important topics discussed in the lectures included working with emotions which are often provoked by false content. Learning to work with them is necessary, so we rely on something other than the first – often distorted – impression that emotionally charged news gives us. Unfortunately, under the influence of intense emotions, we also tend to share information that we have not verified, and that may be false.
In the evaluation forms, the participants shared they appreciated the comprehensibility, topicality and, above all, the applicability of the lessons learnt in primary and secondary education. They also expressed an interest in follow-up events.
The lecture also caught the attention of Czech Television. You can watch the segment (in Czech) here.
We are planning follow-up lectures for the first quarter of 2022. Those interested in participating will be able to register directly on the CEDMO website.
